After leaving the Week 15 game early with a groin injury, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr couldn’t return and things didn’t sound promising from Jon Gruden. With the team’s season on the line. Dec 22, 2020 Initial reports indicated quarterback Derek Carr would miss 10-14 days with the groin injury he suffered against the Chargers last Thursday. But Carr was back on the practice field in a limited capacity as the Raiders began preparing for Saturday’s game against the Dolphins. It appears that Derek Carr’s season is over after suffering a groin injury in the team’s Week 15 loss to the Chargers. Marcus Mariota filled in during Carr’s absence and performed well and many are wondering if the team could move on from their franchise quarterback this offseason.

That seems a tad premature, considering Carr has improved in each of his three seasons under Jon Gruden. But if the Raiders want to save some money and get a fantastic offer, maybe they would consider it. But where could the potential landing spot be for Carr?

In a recent article by Pro Football Focus, the site suggested a trade of Carr to the Indianapolis Colts this offseason. In this proposed trade, the Colts would surrender a first-round pick, along with two other top-100 picks for the veteran quarterback. Here is the reasoning behind the potential trade below:

“This is exactly what the Indianapolis Colts could be looking for. Carr could do exactly what Philip Rivers has done this season — stand behind an elite offensive line and get the ball out quick to playmakers — but with the added benefit of Carr’s mobility.

The Colts traded away the 13th overall pick in 2019 for DeForest Buckner, so perhaps they don’t want to trade away first round picks in consecutive years, but they have a window here with this roster after Andrew Luck shocked the world with his retirement. Rivers has looked good the last month or so, but his ceiling is apparent. Carr could make this Colts team a legitimate contender in the AFC in 2021.”

In terms of value, this isn’t a bad offer at all for Carr. But with how well he has played over the last few seasons, there is really no reason to give up on him. Instead, look for the Raiders to continue to build up their defense and hope their young skill players in Henry Ruggs III and Bryan Edwards can help the offense make a leap in 2021.

Over the last two seasons, many wondered if Jon Gruden (and Mike Mayock) would eventually try to upgrade the quarterback situation for the Raiders. While Derek Carr has had some nice seasons, it appeared he had started to regress.

However, one reason why the Raiders did stick with him this year is that Carr has progressed in each of the last two seasons under Gruden. Another year of growth, along with an improved wide receiver corps, could make him one of the top-10 quarterbacks in the NFL And that is exactly what played out for Carr and the Raiders.

Not only did Carr have the most passing yards of his career, but he also finished the season with a passer rating of 101.4. He also set career-highs in yards per attempt (7.9) and adjusted yards per attempt (8.2). In a recent article by Pro Football Focus, he finished as the site’s No. 8 passer on the season:

“We suggested that Carr could benefit from a more aggressive style before the start of the 2020 season, and that’s precisely what happened in 2020. He increased his average depth of target from 6.9 yards to 9.1, and we saw 20 more big-time throws against just six more turnover-worthy plays. Carr posted his best passing grade since 2016, and the Raiders’ offense developed into one of the league’s best.”

Considering all of the injuries at wide receiver and on the offensive line that Carr had to deal with in 2020, this was an awfully impressive season by him. While the team could stand to improve in their red zone offense and needs to be more consistent from game-to-game, Carr has proven that he is a franchise quarterback.

If the Raiders can continue to add and improve at wide receiver this offseason, there isn’t anything preventing Carr from moving up this list in 2021. It’s pretty clear that he’s a great fit in Gruden’s offense and the longer these two are together, the better it is for the direction of the franchise.
